Argentinian Choripán (Chorizo Sandwich with Chimichurri) Recipe

Choripán is a sandwich which consists of a crusty bread filled with chorizo and topped with chimichurri. The chorizo is sliced lengthwise and grilled. The bread is usually a loaf or baguette, cut down into shorter sections then filled. It is usually served at events and eaten as a snack.
Choripán is a mash up of the words chorizo and pan, the Spanish word for bread. A chorizo is a large, spicy pork sausage which originated from Spain. Argentinian chorizo is made with a combination of beef and pork.
Its spiciness is mild, and it is flavored with paprika, wine and garlic. Chimichurri is a green herb-based sauce, usually paired with meats.
Other toppings in addition to chimichurri are enjoyed on choripan. These include salsa, mustard, vegetables like tomatoes, lettuce and peppers.
Origin & Cultural Significance
Choripán originated in Argentina somewhere around the 19th century. It’s also popular in Uruguay. Though bearing resemblance to a hotdog though it’s not considered one. Like hotdogs, it can be found sold by street vendors and is a staple at sporting events.

Choripán Recipe
Choripán is a sandwich which consists of a crusty bread filled with chorizo and topped with chimichurri.
Ingredients
- Small baguette - 1
- Chorizo sausage - 1
Chimichurri Sauce
- Coriander (fresh, finely chopped) - 1 bunch
- Parsley (fresh, finely chopped) - 1 bunch
- Oregano (fresh, finely chopped) - 1 tbsp
- Garlic (finely chopped) - 1 clove
- Red chili (large, finely chopped) - ½
- White onion (finely chopped) - ½
- Red wine vinegar - ½ tbsp
- Salt - 1 tsp
- Olive oil - 1 tbsp
Salsa Criolla
- Red onion (finely chopped) - 1
- Red wine vinegar - ½ tbsp
- Plum tomatoes (finely chopped) - 5
- Olive oil - ½ tbsp
- Chili flakes - ½ tsp
- Salt - ½ tsp
- Pepper - ½ tsp
Instructions
- In a large bowl, add all of the chopped-up chimichurri ingredients.
- Stir well and then set aside in the fridge.
- In another bowl, add the chopped-up salsa criolla ingredients.
- Combine well and then set aside.
- Heat up a frying pan and add in a teaspoon of oil.
- Place the chorizo into the pan and fry for 5 minutes on each side or until fully cooked.
- Remove the chorizo from the pan and slice in half lengthways. Don't cut all the way through.
- Slice the baguette lengthwise but not all the way through.
- Place it face down onto the frying pan used to cook the chorizo, and fry for 3 minutes on medium heat.
- Remove the roll from the pan and put it on a plate.
- Serve up by adding on the chimichurri sauce, chorizo, and the salsa criolla.
