Cóctel de Conchas is a seafood cocktail containing fresh clams, citrus juices, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, popular in El Salvador. It is typically enjoyed as an appetizer or a light meal on hotter days.

The ingredients vary depending on the season as well as where in the country you sample the dish. 

Origin and Cultural Significance

Seafood cocktails are popular all over the coastal regions of Central America, using the local, fresh ingredients to put the cocktails together. What makes Cóctel de Conchas stand apart is the use of black clams which are found in the region and added to the dish. 

The dish is popular at the beach, and in coastal restaurants – but is also enjoyed at home with family as a light meal in the summer months, and at get-togethers and gatherings as a side dish.

Cóctel de Conchas is typically served with crackers, extra lemon juices, and plenty of hot chili peppers.

Cóctel de Conchas is a seafood cocktail containing fresh clams, citrus juices, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro.

Ingredients

  • Fresh clams (cleaned) - 2 lbs
  • Lime juice - 1/2 cup
  • Lemon juice - 1/4 cup
  • Tomatoes (diced) - 2
  • Red onion (finely chopped) - 1/2 cup
  • Fresh cilantro (chopped) - 1/4 cup
  • Hot sauce (optional) - to taste
  • Salt and pepper - to taste

Instructions

  1. Steam the clams in a large pot until they open. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. Remove the clams from their shells and chop them into bite-sized pieces.
  3. In a large bowl, combine the clam meat, lime juice, lemon juice, tomatoes, red onion, and cilantro.
  4. Stir in hot sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.
  5. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour before serving.
  6. Serve cold, garnished with additional cilantro if desired.
