Argentinian Pebeta Recipe

Pebeta is an Argentinian sandwich made with small soft rolls filled with ham, cheese, lettuce, and tomato. It is a popular snack or “light meal” and particularly popular for small children. Although the snack is quite simple to make, they are a staple all over Argentina.

Origin and Cultural Significance

Pebeta sandwiches are commonly found ready-to-eat in bakeries and cafes all over Argentina. The name Pebete literally means “little boy” in the local Spanish dialect, and the soft rolls are often associated with childhood as a popular, simple snack enjoyed by most kids in the country.

The bread rolls are like a slightly fatter hot dog bun, or an elongated dinner roll made with wheat flour. The crust is brown and thin, and typically used to make the Pebata cheese, cured meat, tomato, and mayonnaise sandwich, although you can find different variations.
