French Beef Stroganoff Recipe

Beef Stroganoff is a traditional French dish that contains sautéed beef in a cream-based sauce, traditionally served on top of rice or pasta.
While the dish is typically made with beef steak, it is commonly made with ground beef for convenience and is found in French restaurants all over the world.
Origin and Cultural Significance
While Beef Stroganoff originates in France, as the same might suggest it has deep Russian roots. Published in a Russian cookbook in 1871, “Beef a las Stroganov” was a traditional Russian dish that contained beef cubes sauteed in butter served with a mustard-based roux.
The dish is thought of as French because the modern-day Stroganoff containing mushrooms, onions, and sour cream was entered into a cooking competition by a French chef, where it grew in popularity.
While the dish originated in Russia, the techniques used to make the modern version are classically French – and it is often one of the first dishes French-trained chefs learn to make.
