Gifiti (Rum, Herbs & Roots Drink) Recipe
Gifiti is a herbal drink made with rum and a mixture of roots, herbs, and spices including anise, clove, and garlic. It is popular all over Central America and is often used for medicinal purposes by the Garifuna people.
Gifiti is popular wherever you find the Garifuna people, particularly in Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. It is believed to have a range of health benefits such as increased virility, improved circulation, and boosted happiness – and different variations of the drink can be found for different ailments.
Typically the drink is made at home and it differs from household to household, as well the location in which you try it. You can also find commercial bottles of Gifiti, where it is sold pre-made in plastic bottles.
As well as being consumed for medicinal purposes, Gifiti is also enjoyed recreationally in the form of shots.
The drink is usually brown or green in color and the alcohol content varies, depending on where the drink was made and whether it was made for medicinal or recreational use – with the recreational versions often much stronger.
