Lithuanian Kepta Duona Recipe

Kepta Duona is a traditional Lithuanian dish of bread sliced into strips, fried then rubbed with fresh garlic cloves and sprinkled with salt. It is served as a snack and is a usual accompaniment when drinking beer.
Kepta Duona translates directly from Lithuanian as fried bread. Using the right bread is to key to this snack. Soft rye bread does not hold up well, instead dense, dark rye bread or pumpernickel is preferred.
There is little variation of Kepta Duona. Kepta Duona su Surio Padazu is the variation topped with a cheese sauce. Some recipes call for caraway which is added to the frying oil.
Origin & Cultural Significance
Kepta Duona originated from Lithuania but it is also popular in other Baltic countries. Bread is a staple in the Lithuanian diet and the dish is believed to have come about as a way to use up tough old bread, but it also created a new way to enjoy another well-loved staple with a long history in Lithuania – beer!

Lithuanian Kepta Duona Recipe
Kepta Duona is a traditional Lithuanian dish of bread and garlic.
Ingredients
- Brown bread - 1 loaf
- Vegetable oil - as needed
- Garlic cloves - 2
- Salt - as needed
Instructions
- Cut the bread into short strips.
- Heat the vegetable oil in a frying pan.
- Fry the bread pieces in several batches until golden brown. The oil may need to be refilled.
- Drain on paper towels.
- Rub the still hot slices of bread with a peeled clove of garlic on all sides and sprinkle generously with salt.
