The dish also includes meat (either chicken, beef, pork or tofu) and several vegetables, such as Chinese kailan and straw mushrooms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, broccoli is often used as a substitute for kailan. Seasonings such as sweet soy sauce, fish sauce, sugar, garlic and black pepper are also added to enhance the flavor of the dish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as <a href=\"https:\/\/travelfoodatlas.com\/laos-food\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67854\">Laos<\/a>, lad na is also widely popular in <a href=\"https:\/\/travelfoodatlas.com\/thai-foods\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"62797\">Thailand<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/travelfoodatlas.com\/malaysian-food\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"64120\">Malaysia<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Origin &amp; Cultural Significance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Lad na is believed to be of <a href=\"https:\/\/travelfoodatlas.com\/chinese-food\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15514\">Chinese origin<\/a> and was introduced to Southeast Asia by migrants from Guangdong province and, more specifically, from the Chaoshan area at the eastern end of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&lsquo;Lad&rsquo; means <em>to pour<\/em> or <em>to pour out<\/em>, and &lsquo;na&rsquo; refers to<em> the surface<\/em>. Traditionally, lad na was served as a street food dish during lunchtime.
